the goalie gets the ball passes it to the full back who passes it to the central midfilder who then passes it to the right midfielder who often then puts it back to the lft midfielde, then he passes it to the winger who passes the ball in the middle if the striker cant shoot he passes it back to the midfielder who passes it to the full back and very often back to the goalie. yes they keep posession and might make 20 or so passes but to me that is boring.
i was brought up to a team of goalie 2 full backs 3 half backs and 5 forwards. gil merrick jeff hall ken green, len boyd trevor smith roy warhurst, gordon astell noel kinsey eddie brown peter murphy and alex goven.
in the season 1954/55 blues scored 92 goals in 42 games. the beauty about the football was that the ball was always on the move the inside forwards did not have to look where the wingers were they could just bang it out to the wing and they would be there. they would cross it to the centre forward and the game would be off again.
some people would say that they could never do that these days, and that the players would not be up to todays standards, but dont forget they only trained about once a week they never had trainers like today and if the got injured they were carried off by st johns ambulance men. also they very rarely went off injured as there were no substitutes. there were shoulder charges slide tackles etc but no one cried about it like they do today.
also i spoke to gill merrick and he told me he often went to the match on the bus, no car or taxi. those were the days.
i also remember 40,000 50,000 and even 60,000 crowds and in those days there were not many opposition supporters as they could not afford to travel
also i remember the houses at the back of the tilton i asked my dad why we never lived there as it would have saved us paying as you could lean out the windows and watch the match.
sorry if i have bore dyou but i am fed up with all this talk about new owners or not.
