I thought of this while we were talking about the ten greatest Raiders and ten greatest Cowboys. When Reid mentioned seeing 48 Hours again, I thought Eddie Murphy would be the perfect actor for my first attempt at a list like this, mostly because his filmography is so ridiculously uneven that I knew I’d be forced to choose between bad films just to round out the list. So let’s start with Eddie.
The rules (open to discussion, although I suppose that’s moot because I’m the only one who’s going to do this):
1. You have to pick ten.
2. You have to assign an order.
3. It counts as a film of the named actor only if he or she is a main character or a significant supporting character. Yes, I know that’s open for interpretation.
Here’s my list of the top ten Eddie Murphy Films, in order from best to…tenth best. I think I’ll give them Criticker-style ratings, ‘though it’s been so long since I’ve seen most of them that those shouldn’t be given much credence.
- 48 Hours (82)
- Trading Places (81)
- Shrek (75)
- Coming to America (75)
- The Golden Child (72)
- Bowfinger (69)
- The Distinguished Gentleman (65)
- Beverly Hills Cop (62)
- Imagine That (55)
- Tower Heist (50)
Interesting. I expected numbers 9 and 10 to be worse than those films, which were at least tolerable. I love Mulan but just didn’t consider Murphy’s part to be that significant. And I’ve not seen Dreamgirls.
