Eddie Murphy may be known for his special brand of humor and silly characters, but when its time for him to address something that is truly an issue for him, he’s never hesitated to speak out.

When Murphy presented the award for Best Picture at the 1988 Academy Awards ceremony, he took the time to address the racial history of Hollywood. Murphy said his first reaction when asked to present was “No, I ain’t going” because at that time only three black people had won Oscars in the whole 60 year history of The Academy. His manager told him he couldn’t snub the academy. Murphy said to the audience that night,“I’ll probably never win an Oscar for saying this but, hey I gotta say this…I just feel that we have to be recognized as a people. So I’m gonna give this award, but black people will not ride the caboose of society and we will not bring up the rear anymore and I want you to recognize us.”

Murphy boldly stood in front of millions and called out Hollywood for its racist ways. He also may have been right when he jokingly said speaking out may cost him. Murphy has been nominated once for an academy award for “Dreamgirls”—he didn’t win.
