I saw this movie on DVD recently and I was really looking forward to it, as my friend had told me that Eddie Murphy was as funny as 1980's Coming to America Eddie Murphy in this film. I did not find this to be the case when I watched Tower Heist. First of all, it was way too focused on Ben Stiller's character. I'm not a huge fan of Ben Stiller, sometimes he does something really funny and other times he's just not amusing to me. I vacillate greatly on my opinion of him as a comedic actor, his father on the other hand, I love. As for Tower Heist, I think the most hilarious character was Gabourney Sibide's character who was not in the film nearly enough. I also enjoyed Matthew Broderick's performance of the completely depressed dead pan former financier who was considering male prostitution before being asked to assist in the tower heist. The only attention catching scene for me was when the car is hanging off the side of the building. I am not generally afraid of heights but that scene gave me the heebie jeebies. I can honestly say that the funniest moments in the movie were also part of the previews, which is so annoying. I might as well only waste thirty seconds of my life watching a preview and laughing then watching a 90 minute movie that only has 30 seconds worth of laughs. This movie summed up in one word: meh. I guess my friend found it more humorous than I, so it is possible you will too. I neither recommend nor not recommend – judge for yourself.
