Conor Maynard may have been given the title of the UK’s answer to Justin Bieber, but the Brighton-born singer is out to prove himself as an artist in his own right with debut album, Contrast.
Following the success of debut single Can’t Say No and new track Vegas Girl, here at MTV.co.uk we had great expectations for Maynard’s first offering, and we are pleased to reveal that the 19-year old delivers on this record, filled with Conor’s cheeky pop swagger.
Stand out tracks include opening single Animal - a building dance number which sets the tone for the rest of Conor’s album and Turn Around, a collaboration with Ne-Yo which shows off the R&B flare in Maynard’s vocals – fitting perfectly with the silky tones of the Closer hitmaker.
As well as Ne-Yo, Conor has also teamed up with Pharrell Williams on Lift Off, which wouldn’t sound out of place on a Justin Timberlake record, as Pharrell’s trademark beats take us back to JT’s iconic LP, Justified.
Other highlights include the Frank Ocean penned track Pictures, once again displaying Conor’s desire to cement himself as an artist away from the shadow of the Biebster, while Glass Girl sees Maynard working with Pharrell again to create another perfect pop track.
However, our favourite tune on the album is Better Than You, which sees Maynard team up with lady of the moment Rita Ora on this attitude-riddled anthem, which Conor co-wrote.
The song shows off a more mature side to Maynard, as he exchanges heated lyrics with Ora, with the pair cheekily name-checking each other towards the end of the uptempo tune. A sure fire hit, and we hope it’s a single.
Final Thought: Contrast is a strong and confident debut record from Maynard, giving fans an insight into his own musical tastes and inspirations, being Justin Timberlake and dare we say it, the late great Michael Jackson. With a poptastic collection of tunes and help from some of his A-List pals, this debut is bound to blast the Brighton lad to superstardom.
